Wildlife Sightings, Rhino De-hornings, and Our Elusive Leopard

Elephant herd

Already half way through 2013! Already been a great few months since our grand opening in February and the lodge is well on its way forward! It’s about time for a much anticipated update so here goes …

Winter seems to be a bit warmer this year. Despite the early mornings and late afternoons, which can get rather chilly, the days can be very pleasant and can get quite warm. But don’t be fooled though, there is still the odd cold front moving through so check the weather well in advance to get a more or less idea of what to bring. I would suggest just packing everything just in case! The grassy vegetation is drying out slowly and most of the trees have still got their  leaves.

In terms of sightings, it has been announced that we have a new edition to our breeding herd of elephants! Which will tally up the total to 28 in the Herd and 35 altogether which is still well below our carrying capacity. Let the parade begin!

Otherwise, we had a rare sighting of our Male cheetah recently. Some of the guests had spotted it walking parallel to the game viewer in the tall grass. We managed to relocate him several hundred meters up the road and we had a wonderful sighting of him as he ambled across the open savannah. Nambiti has lost 13 cheetahs in the past 4 years due to lions and hyenas. This is seemingly natural but very sad none the less.

Other great sightings include numerous buffalo, rhino and lion. Our male lions in particular, are ready for their matchbox photo shoot!

That elusive leopard continues to tease me from within the bushes. But hey – we are finding multiple scratch posts, scat and tracks around the North of the reserve. So it’s only a matter of time before he shows himself! Surely 5 years is a long enough wait??? Will you be the one to share my first leopard sighting with on Nambiti?

On another note, we are also very proud to say that Ndaka Safari Lodge was involved with the de-horning of 2 rhino a few weeks ago, and we also managed to remove our adult lioness’s collar on the same day. Go team!

Well that’s all for this now but be sure to check my blog next week for another awesome update!

Peace
Bundu Brad
